According to Buzzfeed, Apple has decided that there is no point installing 4K streaming capabilities in its new Apple TV 2.0.
To be fair, 4K content is still something of a niche market, but when your main rivals such as Netflix, YouTube and Amazon have already started broadcasting a limited amount of material in the format (the equivalent of a 3840 x 2160 pixel frame and more than four times the resolution of 1080p) you don't really want to fall behind.
Of course it means that when 4K really does start to happen, your Apple TV 2.0 is going to be so out of date, it probably picks up news from the Roman senate.
Apple might try and fix this buy bringing out a new box and forcing its luckless fanboys to buy it.
Apple is banking on the fact that 4K-capable televisions aren't exactly common in households right now, because ultra-high-definition video requires a lot of storage space.
But it is still surprising that Apple engineers think it isn't worth the effort right now. The question then remains – why buy the new version of the Apple TV anyway?
The box is more or less what it was three years ago, when it was not exactly cutting edge .Either way this one is going to be old technlogy with which to see off any competition.
