Archos rolls out Platinum line tablets

by on15 February 2013

Three quad-cores starting at $199

Archos is at it again. Just weeks after it introduced its Titanium series, the outfit is back with three new tablets with speedier chips under the bonnet.

The new Platinum series tablets feature a similar aluminium design, but they are powered by faster quad-core chips clocked at 1.2GHz. Archos said the new processors also feature an 8-core PowerSGX 544 GPU capable of handling 1080p with ease.

The 8-inch Archos 80 Platinum features a 1024x768 IPS screen and it is priced at $199, which sounds pretty good. It has 2GB or RAM, 8GB of storage and a microSD slot. The Archos 80 measures 200x153x 9.8mm and weighs 480g, which is quite a bit more than the iPad mini, but at $199 few will complain.

The Archos 97 Platinum is basically a 97 Titanium on steroids. It features the same 2048x1536 screen, but unlike the Titanium it is powered by the new quad-core and has 2GB of RAM. It is priced at $299.

Perhaps the most unorthodox Platinum tablet is the Archos 116 Platinum. It has a 11.6-inch 1080p screen and it is priced at $349. It will appear in April, while the 80 and 97 should show up by the end of February.

All three will ship with Android 4.1, but bear in mind that Archos has a pretty good track record when it comes to updates, so we don’t doubt for a second that they will get Android 5.0 at some point. The highlights are definitely the PowerVR SGX544 GPU and 2 gigs of RAM and to be honest we can’t think of anything similar in the $199 to $299 price range.
