Users of Elon Musk's X (formerly known as Twitter) stumbled upon a rather intriguing new option buried deep within the Settings tab this week.
The option, "Allow your posts as well as your interactions, inputs, and results with Grok to be used for training and fine-tuning," refers to X's AI chatbot Grok, which Musk's empire is diligently weaving into the platform.
The fine print informs users that this data will be used to "continuously improve your experience" on X. How thoughtful. It also mentions, almost as an afterthought, that your data will be shared with Musk's AI company, xAI, which powers Grok.
It's positively heartwarming that X is so transparent about its data usage. Even more touching is the fact that users are given the choice to share their data with xAI and X for AI training.
However, X has opted users in by default. Naturally, users had to discover these opt-in and opt-out options on their own because who doesn't love a good treasure hunt?
For those keen to stop X from using its data to train its AI, there are a few simple steps to follow. Note: This setting can only be disabled on X for the web, not via X's iOS or Android apps.
1. Click the Settings and Privacy option on X's left sidebar menu.
2. Once in the Settings tab, click on the Privacy and Safety tab.
3. Scroll down to the Data sharing and personalisation section and click on the Grok option.
4. You should now see the "Allow your posts as well as your interactions, inputs, and results with Grok to be used for training and fine-tuning" setting with the checkmark box ticked. Click on the checkmark to deselect and opt-out.
5. Under that setting, there's also an option to delete any conversation history with X's Grok AI chatbot.
Musk, ever the visionary, has grand plans for his AI company. He recently floated the idea of having Tesla invest $5 billion into xAI, which powers Grok. If X users prefer not to contribute to Musk's next big project, they should follow the steps above.
