According to Tom’s Hardware, thieves use Wi-Fi jamming gear to disable wireless cameras and alarms, allowing them to break into homes undetected and steal valuable items.

In a recent social media post, the LAPD highlighted the use of Wi-Fi jammers in these burglaries and provided a comprehensive checklist of precautions for residents. The hardware for Wi-Fi jamming is easily accessible online and can be purchased for as little as $40 despite being illegal in the United States.

Similar Wi-Fi jammer-assisted burglaries in Edina, Minnesota, where criminals used the devices to prevent homeowners from receiving alerts and to ensure no incriminating video evidence was captured.

The burglars' modus operandi appears to be consistent. They often gain entry via second-story balconies and target high-end jewellery, purses, US currency, and other valuable items. They are frequently accompanied by a getaway driver who also acts as a lookout.

The LAPD's Wilshire division has proactively provided a security checklist that could benefit anyone, not just residents. Key recommendations include considering hard-wiring burglary alarm systems to avoid reliance on Wi-Fi or Apple AirTags and Ring Doorbell app networks. Additionally, residents are advised against disclosing travel plans to Uber, Lyft, or taxi drivers and to be cautious about sharing such information on social media.

Beyond technological measures, the LAPD suggests securing electrical circuit boxes, protecting home DVR recorders, improving property lighting, and trimming shrubbery or trees. Other practical tips include staying vigilant for suspicious individuals, vehicles, and activities and coordinating with neighbours to monitor each other's homes during absences.

Statistics indicate that home burglaries are most prevalent during the summer months, attributed to warmer nights and extended periods when residents are on holiday.
