Sony supplies nearly all of the CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) sensors for the current iPhone 5S's rear-mounted main cameras. The news that Jobs Mob wants to switch to Sony sensors for the secondary camera on the front, which currently uses parts from suppliers in the United States and elsewhere.
It does not mean that the iPhone will have more cameras than ever before, although it would be easy to start a rumour suggesting that Apple is going to install a 3D camera set up in its phones. However, Apple thinks that its fanboys are going to want to use smartphones for video calls. After all there is nothing worse than getting a phone call from an Apple git, other than seeing a picture of the ugly bastard looking smugly at you at the same time.
Sony held the largest share of the global CMOS sensor market in 2012 at 32.1 percent.
