Nevertheless, the software giant has managed to acquire yet another vast portfolio of patents, this time coming from IBM. While not as big as previous transactions between the two companies, IBM transferred 188 granted patents and 28 published patent applications to Google in a deal that was officially recorded at the patent office during the last week of 2011. A number of the patents are related specifically to Internet, phone and mobile phone technologies.
Additionally, the patents cover a broad range of topics including presentation software, blade servers, data caching, server load balancing, network performance, video conferencing, email administration, and instant messaging applications.
