This is roughly 2.5 times more than in 2010 and Apple’s iPad is expected to lead the charge. The iPad still accounts for most of the tablet market, but CES announcements of several Android could make a difference later in the year.
However, Apple interim CEO Tim Cook doesn’t appear overly concerned. He described scaled-up smartphones as bizarre and dismissed current Android tablets as uncompetitive. Cook believes currently available Android tablets use obsolete operating systems that are not intended for tablets. He did not have kind words about upcoming Androids either, describing them as vapor.
"Generally they lack performance specs, they lack prices, they lack timing, and so today they're vapor. We'll assess them as they come out, wherever, but we're not sitting still, and we have a huge first mover advantage,” said Cook.
