In a new report, Piper Jaffray & Co analyst Gus Richard believes Intel is also vying for Apple’s foundry business, as such a deal would make strategic sense for both companies. Richard argues that such a deal would distance Apple from Asian-based competitors and that it would serve to weaken Samsung.
However, all this could only happen over the course of several years and in the short-term Apple will still have to rely on Samsung. TSMC should start taking over part of the business later this year, but Intel is an entirely different story, even if it chooses to start building fruity chips we won't see them anytime soon.
