The company had its IoT event in San Francisco last week and one of the VP's talked about the Qualcomm's vision about the IoT and products which were not snapdragon branded.
You can tell they were taking it seriously, they didn't show up any new smart watch design but it did touched some much wider and possibly much more profitable areas.
Ray Taluri the Senior VR at Qualcomm said that there are 120 million smart connected smart home solutions selling right now. He meant watches, Smart TV, and the Xbox, with its Qualcomm wireless chip inside, as well as automotive chips, Hero 4 camera and a dozen others,
Many Smart TV's on the market have Qualcomm's Wireless chip inside, and Qualcomm counts this asa smart connected device. We even saw a connected light bulbs, connected refrigerator and connected loud speakers.
Qualcomm sees a big opportunity in the control and automation area including security, temperature control, resident lightning and appliances. But it also wants to address home infotainment. This includes Set top boxes, gaming consoles, Smart TVs and Cameras. The company also hopes that all these devices will fit into the home using an AllJoyn communication fabric.
The market opportunity in IoT is big, but the market adoption hasn't been as fast as many want. A connected lightbulb sounds like a good idea but it costs $39. This is some 39 times more than a normal lightbulb and at least four times more than the high quality not connected LED lightbulb. These things still cost a lot of money and some connected lighbulbs incuding Philips Hue provide three lightbulbs and a hub for $199.
