At the time ATI was acquired, we suggested that AMD might start making GPUs in its own Dresden fabs, and now it turns out that we were right all along.
Dresden is completely focused on IMB’s Silicon on Insulator (SOI), while graphics and Intel’s CPUs are producing bulk silicon in High or Low – K process. In order for AMD to start making its own GPUs they need to make some factory changes to produce in bulk and this will happen through 2009.
A head of communications at Foundry Co., Jon Carvill, has just confirmed that these adjustments will take place through 2009 and that AMD will be able to start production of bulk silicon by early 2010. Realistically, this indicates a fully ramped production will start in 2010.
The Foundry Company will be in competition with its old friend, TSMC, for ATI GPUs.
The upstate New York factory will also be capable of producing bulk silicon, as we were told that this is the majority of the silicon market and that Silicon on insulator is used mainly by AMD for its CPUs.
