Intel recently announced that 75 new ultrabook designs are on the way, with prices starting as low as $699. IDC believes the new price points will drive sales. Senior researcher Antonio Wang projects ultrabook sales will hit 30 to 40 million in 2012.
Canalys analyst Pin-Chen Tang believes the success of ultrabooks will revolve around the price. He reckons that the $699 price tag will still be too high for some consumers and that Intel has to bring down prices to just $300 or $400, and this will not happen over night. It will take Intel a couple of years to get crack the $500 mark, so $300 ultrabooks are still years away.
