Targets hobbyists and SMEs

Nvidia has unveiled a $249 version of its Jetson computer for artificial intelligence applications, halving the price of its predecessor in a bid to attract more hobbyists and small companies.

The Jetson computers, described as "portable brains," are designed to enable developers of robots, industrial automation, and other hardware to perform advanced AI computations directly, bypassing the need for remote data centres.

Nvidia's primary clientele has traditionally been large corporations and AI startups investing vast sums in AI model training and operations. With the Jetson lineup, the company says it wants to democratise AI technology, making it accessible to smaller entities, hobbyists, and students eager to explore AI-integrated products.

In a promotional video, Nvidia founder Jensen Huang departed from his typical "understated" presentations before massive server racks, showcasing the new, compact Jetson device on a tray, likening it to a freshly baked offering.

The $249 Orin Nano Super model significantly enhances performance, almost doubling the speed and efficiency of its predecessor and handling approximately 70 per cent more computational tasks. While it uses less-advanced chips compared to Nvidia's top-tier products, it targets commercial developers focused on consumer technologies such as drones and cameras.

The more sophisticated Jetson Thor model is designed for advanced applications, including humanoid robots and automation systems.

Analysts believe the Jetson line could broaden Nvidia's market reach, particularly among customers developing robotic applications. Competitors like Intel, Google, and Qualcomm offer similar edge systems, potentially challenging Jetson's position with specialized solutions for applications such as vision processing.

Although the US has imposed restrictions on Nvidia selling its most advanced hardware in China, the company has assured that the new Jetson product will be available in China through local distributors.
