Qualcomm wants its new chips in PCs

Today laptops, tomorrow the world

Qualcomm has confirmed that while Snapdragon X Plus or X Elite chips have been headed towards laptops that is just part one of its cunning plan.

A Qualcomm slide (above) hints at a potential showdown with Apple, showcasing both an all-in-one and a mini-PC. While these are likely generic shapes, it's a clear sign that Qualcomm is ready to take on the Apple Mac Mini.

The Tame Apple Press is also quivering in its boots about this, as it claims that Qualcomm is copying its favourite company’s business model. If this is the case, then Qualcomm could easily develop products to match the Mac Mini, the iMac, the Mac Studio, and the Mac Pro.

What would be scary for Apple is that these Qualcomm machines would not only be better and cheaper, but they would also come with the ability to run Windows and a huge amount of legacy software.

To make matters worse, Qualcomm has been getting on much better with its many OEM hardware partners who will be ready to swamp the market with a range of PCs.

It's crucial for Windows OEMs to consider the desktop in response to Qualcomm's plans. While we may have to wait to see their innovations, this is just the beginning of a new era for Windows on ARM, and it's going to make a significant impact.

Intel and AMD will also be concerned, as they have invested heavily in x86. While this is not going away, as Microsoft has shown no signs of reducing its x86 support, there will be a lot less market for the pair to fight over.
