Based on the same Excavator CPU architecture as AMD's Carrizo APU lineup, the new Athlo X4 845 is quite a surprising addition to the lineup. It features two Excavator modules, or four CPU cores, clocked at 3.5GHz base and 3.8GHz maximum turbo clocks and has on-board graphics card. It has 2MB of L2 cache and offer eight PCI-Express 3.0 lanes, which makes it obvious that this is an entry-level budget SKU.

We already know that Excavator architecture will not bring any performance improvements but that it is rather focused on power efficiency, which is how AMD managed to retain 65W TDP with such high CPU clocks on the Athlon X4 845 CPU. The Excavator CPU architecture brings several other improvements, including improve cache, better branch prediction, new instruction support and support for modern standby low power modes.

The Alhlon X4 845 will also be bundled with AMD's new 95W Quiet Thermal Solution CPU cooler as the new A10-7860K, which borrows some design solutions from the earlier unveiled AMD Wraith CPU cooler.

The new quad-core Athlon X4 845 should be available soon with MSRP of US $70.
