If one of the pair does not buy the plant Micron could shut it. Intel apparently wants to upgrade the plant and use it to produce 10-nanometer chips, its next generation of chips. Intel was the plant’s original owner and can veto over transferring it to any third party.
The factory was built by Intel in 1999 to produce the then-new Pentium chips and is one of Israel’s oldest plants. In February 2010, Micron bought Numonyx, a company that had taken over the Kiryat Gat facility, and acquired the facility as part of the deal.
