Nvidia moves to buy 500 mobile patents
Wants to be just like Qualcomm when it grows up
Nvidia has teamed up with Intellectual Ventures to acquire about 500 wireless communication patents.
The patents include 4G LTE technology which is slowly becoming a selling point in the US market. Of course, Nvidia lacks LTE-enabled products and even its flagship quad-core chips are trumped by lesser designs from some ARM players.
The patents were acquired from IPWireless, which retains royalty free access to the technologies. It is worth noting that Nvidia acquired wireless technology outfit Icera last year as well and Nvidia plans to introduce LTE chips based on Icera technology next year.
Still, it will take a while before Nvidia catches up with the likes of Qualcomm in terms of advanced wireless standards and technologies.
