Douglas L. Davis, Intel’s Vice President General Manager, Embedded and Communications Group as just shared some nice numbers on Atom sales.
Since its introduction in April 2008 Intel has sold 70 million Atom CPUs, mostly for netbooks. The good thing about this number is that 40 percent of netbook customers are new to Intel, but of course Davis didn’t tell the world that Atom market has eaten into some of its entry level notebook market. He also noted that Atom processors have managed to find their way into 1200 different designs and SKUs.
The new focus is the embedded market for consumer devices as Intel wants to get Atom into stuff like TVs. This is the way to gain some impressive revenues in a huge market that has remained largely unexplored to Intel up till now.
