Big Blue has rolled out a new four socket BladeCenter server armed with AMD's Opteron 6100 processor, codenamed Magny-Cours.

It means that IBM has joined rivals Dell, Acer and Hewlett-Packard in offering server system based on Opteron 6100 processor. In fact Oracle is yet to release a server system based on the Opteron family of processors, despite the fact that Sun Microsystems was a long time chum of AMD.

An IBM spokesman said that the addition of the System x3755 M3 to IBM's portfolio was part of its “client focused” programme. Punters who want heavily threaded workloads like Java, virtualisation and transaction processing can increase their performance with a dense, cost-effective solution, he said.

The Magny-Cours Opteron has been getting fairly mixed reviews particularly now that Intel has since overhauled its own Xeon range of servers.
