Pine Trail-D is the name of the next generation Atom platform. The new platform has only two chips, the CPU and Southbridge. The chip is known as Pineview, it has graphics and memory controller inside and it connects to Tiger Point chipset which is nothing more than ICH7 with a fancier codename.
Intel
claims than the new architecture will reduce the total kit package size by a
massive 70 percent. More importantly, the total TDP of the next generation Atom
platform will be reduced by about 50 percent, which is definitely impressive.
One of
Intel's top managers said that the next generation Atom might end up in fanless
netbooks. The new platform also supports DDR2 800MHz, and a lesser TDP probably means
better battery life for the next generation platform, but you will have to wait
for at least Q1 2010 before you see netbooks based on new Atom platforms.
Desktop Pineview-DC dual core comes in Q4 2009.
