It seems we're stuck at 300mm for the next decade, until 2017.
Considering some naysayers believed they would never appear due to high R&D costs, this is still a positive development. Intel, Samsung and TSMC are working on 450nm projects and when and if they appear, they should churn out 8nm or 5nm nodes.
Gartner Inc. analyst, Dean Freeman, believes the total cost of 450nm technology could end up in the $20 to $40 billion range, and a 450nm toolset should cost a cool $100 mil, so start saving up.
Freeman thinks 450mm makes no sense for the time being, but the future will force manufacturers to transition to it at some point.
