AMD changing CPU model numbering, again
Going for five digits
According to Expreview, AMD is about to change its CPU model names with the introduction of its 45nm Phenom X4 and X3 processors. We have yet to confirm these details, but we're not sure why AMD would want these unwieldy product names, as no one's going to remember them.
The Phenom X4 family looks set to get the 20x00-series and 16x00-series as well as the 20350 and 20550, which will differ by support DDR2 memory, while the other models will only support DDR3 memory. The 20xxx processors have a TDP of 125W while the 16x00 models will have a TDP of 95W. The 16x00-series will have 2 or 3MB cache, while the 20xxx-series will have a total of 8MB of cache.
The Phenom X3 family should be made up of the 14x00 and 12x00-series, with the 14x00 models featuring more cache memory. All of the new Phenom X3's will be 95W TDP parts with DDR3 support. All of the new CPUs will use the AM3 socket with a 4,000MHz HyperTransport 3.0 frequency apart from the 20350 and 20550, which are AM2+ parts.
Clock speeds look set to range from 2.6 to 3GHz, depending on the model, with the DDR2 parts expected to be the first to appear. The 20350 should be clocked at 2.8GHz, while the 20550 should be slightly faster at 3GHz. The DDR2 versions are expected to have a short life span, according to Expreview, and shouldn't last much longer than Q2 2009.
