It looks like AMD won't be launching any high performance CPUs for a while. AMD's roadmap doesn’t include anything that will fight 3.2GHz Nehalem with either pricing or performance with so AMD wants to focus on more profitable market such as sub $199.
The quad core is the top solution but AMD knows that their Deneb is not fast enough to catch up with Nehalem.
Once AMD returns with a high performance part, it will launch a new FX or however it decides to call its Extreme edition CPU. We can confirm that this won’t happen by the end of the year but it should occur in 2009.
The focus remains on Quad cores at least for this performance to high end market while dual and tri cores should do well for most people.
