Intel announces Atom
Silverthorne and Diamondville are official
Intel has finally revealed the official name for its Silverthorne and Diamondville processors, and they will hence forth be known as Intel Atom. There will also be a platform brand and, no, there's no prize if you've already guessed it, as Intel is simply going with Centrino Atom.
These new 45nm have been designed for a TDP of between 0.6 and 2.5W and each die is a tiny 25 mm2. Intel is expecting clock speeds of up to 1.8GHz for now, although this will, of course, depend on the type of device that the processors will go into.
The Atom processors will use the Core 2 Duo instruction set and should be compatible with any applications that you can run on a Core 2 Duo based system. Intel has designed the Atom processors for what they call "netbooks" and "nettops", basic Internet devices, but also for the new MID market, although here in the Centrino Atom guise.
