Chipmaker AMD has released details of its new "Bobcat" chip which it hopes to introduce into the small, ultra-portable notebook market.

According to Mercury News, the chip will not appear until 2009,  and company executives claim it will be 25 percent better in performance boost over a similar Intel chip.

Corporate Vice President Randy Allen told analysts that wafer yields are running ahead of plan and manufacturing lines are producing high-speed, defect-free products.

Analysts said that Bobcat could be critical to AMD over time as the PC market gives ground to a variety of portable, light-weight consumer gear for connecting to the Internet.

Intel is planning a similar product called Silverthorne.
