Intel cuts 1,000 Jobs in New Mexico
End of 200 millimeter wafers
Intel has fired 1,000 people and closed down its 200-millimeter wafer operation in New Mexico.
The Rio Rancho plant hires 5,000 people among Intel's worldwide work force of 92,000. Some of the workers will be given jobs elsewhere in Intel, although some of them have been working for more than 25 years at the plant.
A spokesman for Intel said that 200-millimeter technology was obsolete, and the Rio Rancho plant's Fab 11X unit will focus on manufacturing 300-millimeter wafers.
