Samsung officially announces Galaxy S24 series smartphones

by on17 January 2024

AI features take the lead, but there are plenty of other upgrades

At its Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung unveiled its new Galaxy S24 series smartphone lineup, including the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and the flagship Galaxy S24 Ultra. As expected, a big part of the announcement was focused on AI, or in Samsung's case, Galaxy AI, a set of AI-powered features that will be coming to the new Galaxy S24 lineup.

The design of the entire series is quite familiar, although Samsung did change things up a bit, especially with the flagship Galaxy S24 Ultra. In addition to the Galaxy AI, Samsung did one major update, as now, the entire series will be getting the Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with variable 1 to 120Hz refresh rate. Of course, the screen will come in various sizes and resolutions, but it is a major update since these were limited to the Ultra series before.

Flagship Galaxy S24 Ultra gets all the bells and whistles

Although the entire series kept pretty much the same design, the Galaxy S24 Ultra got a few changes, including the titanium frame, making the phone slightly lighter compared to the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The phone also got a bit thinner and shorter, mostly thanks to its narrower bezels, and now measures 79x162.3x8.6mm and weighs 233g.

Another big upgrade is the screen, which is no longer curved but rather completely flat. The 6.8-inch QHD+ resolution Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen is now brighter at 2,600 nits and protected by new Gorilla Glass Armor, which is said to be four times tougher, and, impressively, 75 percent less reflective.

Samsung caused a lot of confusion about the chipset for its Galaxy S24 lineup, but the flagship Galaxy S24 Ultra will stick to the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC in every market. It is once again a slightly custom SoC for Galaxy smartphone, which most likely comes with a higher-clocked Prime core. To keep it well cooled, Samsung went with a bigger vapor chamber this time. Samsung is pairing up the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC with 12GB of RAM, and either 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of storage.

On the camera side, the Galaxy S24 Ultra will use the 200MP sensor behind a 23mm f/1.7 lens, a new 50MP sensor behind a 115mm telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom, f/3.4 aperture, and optical stabilization, a 10MP 69mm f/2.4 one for short telephoto, and a 12MP 13mm f/2.2 ultrawide one with autofocus. The front camera is a 12MP 26mm f/2.2 one.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra will have a 5,000mAh battery with 45W wired and 15W wireless charging, and it will run on Android 14 with One UI 6.1. Samsung is promising 7 years of software updates as well.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra starts at €1,449/$1,299.

The Galaxy AI features

As said, Samsung was keen to talk about the Galaxy AI, a set of features that will be available on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, including the Live Translate, Interpreter, and Chat Assist, all of which will have some or other means of live translating either calls or texts. There is also Android Auto, Note Asist, Transcript Asist, Circle to Search, as well as camera-focused AI features including the ProVisual Engine, which is a collection of AI-power tools, Super HDR, and more.

The less expensive Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 get plenty of upgrades as well

While the Ultra series always enjoys all the glory, Samsung gave the rest of the Galaxy S24 series decent upgrades that would also make them interesting for future buyers. These include the aforementioned Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with variable refresh rate, resolution upgrade, more RAM, and a slightly larger battery. Unfortunately, these two are also a mix between Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Exynos 2400 SoC depending on the region.

The Galaxy S24+ looks pretty much the same as its predecessor, but gets a slightly larger 6.7-inch flat display with QHD+ resolution, pushing it pretty close to the Galaxy S24 Ultra. The same goes for the Galaxy S24 as well, and while it gets a slightly larger 6.2-inch screen, it still sticks to FHD+ resolution, but at least it is a new screen and both will boast 2,600nits of brightness with Vision Booster. Unfortunately, Samsung is sticking with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on both phones and aluminum frames.

Samsung also increased the RAM size for the Galaxy S24+ to 12GB but it will stick to 256GB and 512GB versions. The Galaxy S24 will come with 8GB of RAM and 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB of storage. Samsung also increased the battery capacity to 4,900mAh on the Galaxy S24+ and to 4,000mAh on the Galaxy S24. The Galaxy S24+ gets 45W wired charging, while the Galaxy S24 sticks to 25W one.

The camera system on both phones is the same, and you get a 50MP main sensor with OIS and f/1.8, a 12MP ultrawide one, and a 10MP telephoto one with 3x zoom. The front camera is a 12MP one with f/2.2 aperture.

The Galaxy S24+ starts at €1,149/$999 while the Galaxy S24 starts at €899/$799.
