Significant speed upgrade

We have already described the most prominent features of Snapdragon 632 and we wanted to address the entry level Snapdragon 439 and 429 in a separate article. These octa and quad core processors also show a steep performance upgrade from the previous generation.

The 400 tier includes a mix of popular features with balanced and long battery life and affordability to meet day to day entry level customer’s need. This is popular for mass market and price sensitive smartphone buyers. The platform includes Snapdragon 430, 435, 450 as well as  425 and 427.

The 400 tiee has been adopted by numerous global OEMs and resulted with over 2300 designs by end of Q1 2018.

Jus like Snapdragon 632, the Snapdragon 439 also comes with eight cores but this time, the SoC uses eight times ARM Cortex A53 instead of Kryo 250 for Snapdragon 632. The four performance Cortex A53 are clocked at 1.95 GHz while four efficiency cores are clocked at 1.45 GHz. You can expect up to 25 percent performance increase compared to Snapdragon 430. The 430 had its maximal clocks limited to 1.4 GHz.

Adreno 505 inside of this core is 20 percent faster than Adreno 505 inside of Snapdragon 430 probably due to higher clock. The Snapdragon 439 targets Full HD plus devices and it is important that Snapdragon 439 and 429 are pin compatible but these processors are also software compatible with Snapdragon 632, 626, 625 and 450. This dramatically reduces the R&D cost and time to market for many OEMs.

Cortex A53 eight and four with faster GPUs

Snapdragon 439 supports a single 21-megapixel camera or two eight megapixel cameras. The camera features include support for cutting edge 3A algorithms including auto focus, auto white balance and auto exposure. It also supports computational photography, including machine learning and post processing.

Snapdragon 429 has four ARM Cortex A504 and is fighting the last year’s Snapdragon 425 and has all four performance cores capable of 1.95 GHz. This is a massive 25 percent increase compared to last year's processor work which worked only up to 1.4 GHz. The new Adreno 504 GPU is now 50 percent faster than the 425’s Adreno 308. The platform targets HD+ resolutions and supports 16-megapixel single camera or two eight megapixel shooters too.

SD439

Expect more than a day of talk time for both Snapdragon 439 and 429, seven days of music playback, 10+hours of gaming, 5 hours of video capture, 13+ hours of video playback and 10+ hours of video streaming.

They  both support Snapdragon X6 LTE modems capable of Cat 4 download and Cat 5 uplink with 150 Mbps down and 75 Mbps peak uplink speed, which is not bad for the entry level.

It supports the same AI capabilities as the much beefier Snapdragon 532. The Snapdragon 632, 439 and 429 support Qualcomm neural Processing SDK and Android Neural Network. When it comes to frameworks the platform supports Caffe / Caffe2, Google’s TensorFlow and mobile optimized TensorFlow Lite and ONNX. This translates to user cases around style transfers, assisted photography, text translation, people detection, face unlock, Bokeh for single camera, object detection, relightning, smart album or face attributes.

Commercial devices are expected in the second half of 2018.
