Affordable 5.99-incher with AI selfie camera

As rumored earlier, Xiaomi has unveiled its affordable Redmi S2 smartphone in China, which comes with a 5.99-inch HD+ resolution screen, Snapdragon 625 SoC, and AI-assisted selfie camera.

Although not as powerful as the earlier unveiled Redmi Note 5, the new Xiaomi Redmi S2 packs quite a few interesting features for its targeted market of affordable smartphones, including a tall 5.99-inch screen with lower 1440x720 resolution, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 SoC with octa-core Cortex-A53 CPU clocked at 2.0GHz and Adreno 506 GPU, 3GB or 4GB of RAM and 32GB or 64GB of storage.

The phone measures at 160.73x77.26x8.1mm and weighs 170g, which does not come as a surprise considering its aluminum body. It supports microSD cards in its 2+1-card slot, has a 3080mAh (typ) built-in battery with support for 5V/2A 10W charging, rear fingerprint sensor, micro USB 2.0 port, and 3.5mm headphone jack.

It also comes with rear dual-camera with 12-megapixel and 5-megapixel sensors, just like on the Note 5 Pro, and also features an AI-assisted front camera with a 16-megapixel sensor and HDR support, so it will appeal to those selfie lovers. Thanks to this “AI-assisted” front camera, the Redmi S2 features AI face unlock, AI Portrait Mode, AI Smart Beauty and other similar features.

The Xiaomi Redmi S2 runs on Android 8.1 OS with MIUI 9 on top of it and will be available in Rose, Champagne, and Platinum color options.

The rest of the features include all the usual connectivity options including 802.11bng WiFi and Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, AGPS, GLONASS, and Beidou, as well as gyro, acceleration, distance, light and infrared sensors.

The biggest selling point of the Redmi S2 will be its price, of course, as it will sell for CNY999(€130/$160) for the 3GB/32GB version and CNY1,299 ($200/€170) for the 4GB/64GB version.
