Snapdragon 670 shaping up

by on28 December 2017

Coming in 2018

Qualcomm is doing well in the high end market, owning almost all of it and grabbing a lot of attention in the mainstream too.

The company scored more than a dozen designs with its latest Snapdragon 660 and there are already rumors about the successor, probably called the Snapdragon 670. To clear things up, of course, Samsung is using some Samsung Exynos SoCs and Huawei is using its own Kirin, but the rest, at the high end, use the Snapdragon.

The chip could be a 10nm device and is, most likely, using derived cores from the Snapdragon 830. The new test platform SDM670 is already out to partners and it includes 4/6 GB LPDDR4X RAM, 64 GB eMMC 5.1 flash storage and the WQHD screen. If you are not familiar with WQHD markings you can expect 2560x1440 from such a screen. The platform supports a 22.6 megapixel rear and a 13 megapixel front camera.

We expect to see the updated Adreno graphics, the new Hexagon DSP as well as a faster modem. Qualcomm managed to steal a lot of the market from Taiwan based MediaTek, especially in the Chinese popular brands. Some names who adopted the Snapdragon 660 in the latter part of the year include OPPO R11, OPPO R11 Plus, OPPO R11s, OPPO R11s Plus, Sharp Aquos S2, Asus Zenfone 4, 360 N6 Pro, Gionee M7 Plus, Sharp Aquos R Compact, Vivo X20, Vivo X20 Plus, Smartisan Nut Pro 2 and Xiaomi Mi Note 3.

Just a while ago these guys would be going for the Helio X series but in this round, it seems that Qualcomm has won the battle.

We would not expect to see the Snapdragon 670 that soon in 2018, considering that the quite well equipped Snapdragon 660 was launched in May. Here at Fudzilla, we would expect a similar launch timeframe.

The 2018 phones will aim for a smaller bezel, smaller body to screen ratio, faster performance and better battery life. Some may get fingerprint recognition below the glass while some will go for face/iris unlocking.
