The device was announced in China on Monday and features a smaller 5.5-inch QHD curved display instead of the 5.9-inch QHD curved display on the Mate 9, but with some key differences. For one reason or another, the resolution of the smaller Mate 9 Pro is higher and features a 2560x1440p IPS panel (534ppi), while the larger Mate 9 features a 1920x1080p AMOLED panel (373ppi).

Up to 6GB RAM with 128GB onboard storage
Another key difference is memory and storage capacity, as the Mate 9 Pro gets upgraded to a choice of 4GB RAM with 64GB of storage or 6GB of RAM with 128GB of storage, while the Mate 9 only comes in the first option. In terms of performance, both devices feature the same Hisilicon Kirin 960 SoC with four 2.4GHz Cortex A73 cores and four 1.8GHz Cortex A53 cores.

As for dimensions, the smaller Mate 9 Pro measures 152mm x 75mm x 7.5mm and weighs 169g (5.96 ounces) while the larger Mate 9 measures 156.9mm x 78.9mm 7.9mm and weighs 190g (6.70 ounces).

Meanwhile, the device features the same Leica dual camera system, one a 20-megapixel monochrome lens with large pixels and a second 12-megapixel color lens with support for optical image stabilization, f/2.2, 2160p support, 2x hybrid zoom like the iPhone 7 Plus, and laser autofocus with phase detection. On the front is an 8-megapixel lens with f/1.9 aperture and 1080p support.
As for connectivity, both devices support 802.11ac dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2 LE, NFC and infrared while sporting USB 2.0 Type-C reversible connectors with support for 22.5W super-charging to around 55 percent in 30 minutes. The battery size of both devices is the same at 4,000mAh. While the Mate 9 is offered in single-SIM or dual-SIM/microSD card slot hybrid options, the Mate 9 Pro features dual-SIM hybrid slots, though both devices do include fingerprint readers placed below the dual camera system on the back.
While the Mate 9 comes in five color options (Space Gray, Moonlight Silver, Champagne Gold, Mocha Brown, Ceramic White and Black), the Mate 9 Pro is offered in Space Gray, Moonlight Silver, Champagne Gold and Rose Gold. As for the operating system, the dual-SIM Huawei Mate 9 Pro uses company's Emotion UI 5.0 and runs Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box.
Pricing and availability
The 4GB variant of the Mate 9 Pro is currently available at an MSRP of CNY 4,699 ($684.34 / €636.28 / £547.82) while the 6GB RAM variant of the smartphone has been priced at CNY 5,299 ($771.52 / €717.47 / £618.09). Huawei will also be launching a Mate 9 Porsche Design limited edition unit on December 15th.
