Samsung announced a 1.0µm, pixel-based 16MP image sensor which will to allow manufacturers to keep a slim smartphone while providing the best in camera technology. 

Dubbed S5K3P3 the censor has a 5mm thin profile and reduces module height by 20 per cent while keeping the image quality of current 1.12µm-pixel image sensors.

The new image-based sensors include Samsung's ISOCELL camera technology that can be seen in the Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 4, and the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge.

Samsung S.LSI Marketing Vice President and Head Kyushik Hong said it all showed how Samsung was a trendsetter in the mobile image sensor business.

"We are the first to deliver the most advanced 1.0?m-pixel imager, which meets both high-resolution and slim design requirements for smartphone cameras," he said.

The new 1.0µm-pixel image sensor is available today for purchase.
