Today, everyone’s favorite American Telephone and Telegraph Company popularly known as AT&T finally decided to issue a press release update regarding MMS service on the iPhone.
In its announcement, the company briefly stated that it has been
working for the past several months to prepare our systems and network to
ensure the best possible experience with MMS. Nevertheless, the big date will
be Friday, September 25, 2009 and functionality for multimedia messaging
service will finally be available on iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S through an OS
software update.
“We know that iPhone
users will embrace MMS. The unique capabilities and high usage of the iPhone’s
multimedia capabilities required us to work on our network MMS architecture to
carry the expected record volumes of MMS traffic and ensure an excellent experience
from Day One. We appreciate your patience as we work toward that end.”
As JR Raphael from PC World states, it seems AT&T is
capitalizing “Day One” as if it will be some kind of holy day or rebirth for
the entire iPhone platform. Nevertheless, we will be keeping close watch. On
another note, we should make it clear that the company has been stretching the
patience of many users very thin with MMS due to the fact that Apple had
already included iPhone support for it since the OS 3.0 update back in June. AT&T’s
excuse three and a half months ago was along the lines of “finalizing internal
system upgrades.” In the recent press release, the statement can be summarized
to “heavy and congested iPhone traffic due to the influx of new users.”
At the same time, there have been several hints dropping
down from various sources that Apple will officially enable augmented reality
features through iPhone OS 3.1 in September. If this is to be implemented in
the same software update that AT&T is talking about, which looks to be the
case, then “Day One” will indeed be a significant holiday for the millions of
iPhone owners worldwide.
