More than half of APAC businesses to modernise cloud by 2027

Beancounters at IDC have added up some numbers, divided by their collective shoe size, and concluded that more than 50 per cent of Asia/Pacific businesses will modernise their cloud architectures by 2027.

The IDC FutureScape: Worldwide Cloud 2025 Predictions report highlights a shift from traditional infrastructure to modern cloud solutions, with the region’s march into cloud technology showing no signs of slowing down.

According to the report, more than 77 per cent of APAC organisations see digital infrastructure as critical, driving the adoption of modern cloud setups with AIOps to optimise infrastructure, applications, networks, and costs. The rise of GenAI and traditional AI is accelerating this shift, unlocking new realms of productivity and cutting-edge business models.

By 2028, IDC predicts that more than 90 per cent of new applications developed in APAC will be multi-cloud-enabled, harnessing platform-delivered capabilities to fuel innovation. Businesses embracing Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) aim to arm developers with super-efficient tools for building and deploying applications, fostering agility and adaptability in a multifaceted cloud ecosystem.

IDC Asia/Pacific research director of Cloud Services and Software Daphne Chung said: “The AI Pivot in 2025 will fundamentally reshape how Asia/Pacific businesses approach cloud and digital transformation. Organisations that leverage multi-cloud architectures infused with AI and platform-based capabilities will gain the flexibility to innovate faster, adapt to market demands, and deliver unparalleled customer experiences. This shift is critical to thriving in a multi-cloud, data-driven world.”

Integrating AI into every aspect of business operations is set to drive growth and competitiveness across the region.

IDC predicts a move to air-gapped clouds. By 2026, 35 per cent of organisations will seek network infrastructure providers with sovereign controls as part of their sovereign cloud strategies.

By 2026, 60 per cent of organisations will use specialised accelerated cloud computing services to maximise deployment speed and optimise scaling for AI and other advanced applications.

IDC said that by 2026, 40 per cent of multi-cloud environments would use generative AI to streamline security and identity access management, reducing manual efforts by 50 per cent.

Chung added: “AI and cloud modernisation are reshaping Asia/Pacific businesses, making the AI Pivot necessary to drive growth, efficiency, and competitiveness. Organisations that prioritise AI investments, adopt multi-cloud strategies, and align operations with key pillars will unlock new revenue streams, enhance customer experiences, and secure long-term leadership.”
