The new Seagate Mobile HDD lineup will be available in 1TB and 2TB capacities and is a decent alternative to a high-priced SSDs, at least when capacity is more important than performance. According to the specification list, the new Mobile HDD lineup will provide up to 100MB/s of sequential performance, feature 128MB DRAM buffer, standard SATA 6Gbps interface and consume 1.7W under load and 0.5W in idle.
Both 1TB and 2TB versions of the new Seagate Mobile HDD lineup will be available in three different versions, depending on the level of encryption. So you will be able to choose from a drive without any encryption, a version with standard encryption or one with FIPS 140-2 encryption.
While SSDs are the best option when it comes to notebook performance storage, high capacity 2.5-inch SSDs are quite hard to find and currently only Samsung's 850 Pro and 850 EVO are available at 2TB capacity, and these sell for US $860 and US $648, respectively. This means that Seagate's new Mobile HDD lineup will be a decent budget alternative in case you need more storage for your notebook.
Unfortunately, Seagate's Mobile HDD series is still not listed in the US or Europe so we still do not have any information regarding the price but we are quite sure these will be less expensive than SSD options.
