According to Digitimes, major memory industry players expect SSDs to achieve deep penetration in the PC market in 2011.

Chipmakers are expected to transition to new 20nm-class processes by then, allowing them to drive down costs and finally turn SSDs into a viable option for low cost storage.

During a meeting in Taipei, top execs from Chinese and Taiwanese memory makers urged all companies to develop and standardize SSD specifications in order to challenge core technologies currently controlled by major international vendors.

Although 2011 doesn't seem too far off, SSD prices at the moment are still anything but affordable in spite of their performance edge over traditional storage technologies. A ramp-up of 20nm nodes should help close the gap, but we are still a bit skeptical.
