NVIDIA announces new RTX 50 series GPUs

by on07 January 2025

Blackwell comes to GeForce with RTX 5090, RTX 5080, RTX 5070 Ti, and RTX 5070

During its CES 2025 keynote, NVIDIA CEO, Jensen Huang, announced the new generation of graphics cards for desktops, the GeForce RTX 50 series. Available in January, NVIDIA will be launching four SKUs, ranging from $549 to $1,999, including the GeForce RTX 5070, RTX 5070 Ti, RTX 5080, and the GeForce RTX 5090.

The heart of the GeForce RTX 50 series is the Blackwell GPU, packing 92 billion transistors, and providing up to 4,000 AI TOPS, 380 RT TFLOPS, and 125 Shader TFLOPS, a 3x, 2x, and 1.5x more than the previous generation flagship GPU. It also uses new GDDR7 memory, with memory bandwidth reaching 1.8TB/s, a 2x increase compared to the Ada Lovelace.

The flagship GeForce RTX 5090 is based on the GB202 GPU, packing 21,760 CUDA cores and coming with 32GB of 28Gbps GDDR7 memory on a 512-bit memory interface for that 1,792GB/s of memory bandwidth. It has a rather high TDP of 575W and a hefty price tag of $1,999. The GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition gets a new design that makes it possible to squeeze it into a dual-slot design, featuring a high-density PCB with 3D Vapor Chamber cooling, and just two fans.

The next in line is the RTX 5080, based on the GB203 GPU and packing 10,752 CUDA cores. This one comes with 16GB of faster 30Gbps GDDR7 memory on a 256-bit memory interface, which means 960GB/s of memory bandwidth. It has a much lower 360W TDP and a $999 price tag. The GeForce RTX 5070 Ti is also based on the GB203 GPU, cut down to 70 SMs, or 8,960 CUDA cores. It also comes with 16GB of GDDR7 memory but runs at 28Gbps on the same 256-bit memory interface, so it has a slightly lower 896GB/s of memory bandwidth. It has a TDP of 300W, and it appears to be an AIC-only model, which means we won't see the Founders Edition version.

The last SKU is a decent surprise, as the GeForce RTX 5070 is said to be "twice as fast as the RTX 4070", and priced at $549, which is pretty much the sweet spot on the graphics card market. It uses a GB205 GPU with 48 SMs and 6,144 CUDA cores, as well as 12GB of 28Gbps GDDR7 memory on a 192-bit memory interface. The TDP is set at 250W, and it might be a decent upgrade for those coming from the GeForce RTX 40 series GPUs. This one will also have a Founders Edition version apparently, but it will launch at a later date in February.
