POCO X5 Pro 5G fixes OLED problem

It does not wreck your eyes

POCO’s Pro 5G fixes a problem with OLED which no-one in the industry seems to want to talk about – it screws up your eyesight.

While the big names in the mobile industry have moved to OLED as the next big thing (cough Apple) no one seems concerned about the dangers the screen does to your eyes.

OLED means that each pixel can only be turned on or off, making it difficult to adjust the brightness individually. To change the screen brightness, a PWM dimming mode is used.

PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) dimming alternately blinks the display with a “on → off → on → off” frequence over a short period. By adjusting the “on” and “off” time ratio, and using the visual residual of the human eye, it adjusts the screen brightness from 0% to 100%. For example, the screen is on all the time when the brightness is 100%, and when the brightness is 50%, as long as the screen is off half of the time, our human eyes will mistakenly think that the screen brightness has decreased.

The downside is that the human eye will feel flickering if the operating frequency is too low. Many feel eye discomfort when using phones in low brightness at night because the screen dimming frequency is low in low brightness, and causes aggravated eye fatigue.

Now the POCO X5 Pro 5G has introduced the concept of “1920Hz high-frequency PWM dimming” which it claims will fix the problem.

And from the perspective of the display effect, the POCO X5 Pro 5G’s 1920Hz high-frequency PWM dimming AMOLED screen is good. The screen is bright and transparent, and there are no issues like brightness and colour unevenness like DC dimming.

Although the POCO X5 Pro 5G is not the first model to be equipped with 1920Hz high-frequency PWM dimming. Among phones of the same grade, POCO X5 Pro 5G is rare, which shows how profitable it is.
