Revealed in the latest overclocking guide from der8auer, under the "liberate RX 460 shaders" title, the BIOS update, that is currently only tested on the Asus STRIX 04G and Sapphire Nitro 4G graphics cards, can unlock the Polaris 11 GPU to its full potential.
As you already know, the Radeon RX 460 is based on AMD's Polaris 11 GPU with 14 Compute Units, 896 Stream Processors, 16 ROPs and 56 TMUs. In theory, the fully enabled Polaris 11 GPU packs 16 Compute Units, or 1024 Stream Processors, 16 ROPs and 64 TMUs.
The updated BIOS from der8auer, unlocks those two additional CUs, and according to some early testing, provides anywhere between 10 and 12 percent of performance improvement, depending on the actual game.
Although only two graphics cards were tested with that BIOS update, it is possible that all AMD RX 460 graphics cards can be unlocked, which is definitely a great news for RX 460 owners, providing them with a free performance improvement.
