AMD is set to give its Radeon HD 7950 a helping hand in its fight against Nvidia’s upcoming Geforce GTX 660 Ti via a BIOS ROM image file.
The file will boost the HD 7950’s GPU from the current 800MHz to 850MHz. It will bring PowerTune with Boost that will ensure the GPU overclocks up to 925MHz depending on the graphics requirements.
Being a BIOS update, the actual physical specs will remain the same. The company seems to have decided against overclocking the memory so you can expect it to remain at 1250MHz.
So, the “new” HD 7950 is expected to ship from mid-August, priced the same as the “old” card. Users can update their existing reference HD 7950s, but of course, at their own risk.
