It turns out our well informed sources weren't that well informed after all. This is a new card from ATI but it's not the faster HD 5870.
It is an HD 5870 that can take care of six displays. The official
name is ATI Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Edition and the card will launch
after Cebit. The exact date is March 11th and as you can imagine
this card will go after Matrox multi-display solutions rather than Nvidia's Fermi based
GTX 480.
Since we don’t know too many people with six monitors this
card will definitely be interesting, but it won’t make a huge difference in the
high end market. It has the Halo effect as it's cool to run six displays but
only few will actually do that.
Very few people have two displays to begin with, but some
people with loads of cash and a train / airplane simulation obsession will
definitely go after this card.
