Windows 11 is most popular for gamers

At least on Steam

According to the latest Steam statistics, Windows 11 is the most popular gaming operating system, having over taken Windows 10 for the first time.

The older OS has remained popular despite Microsoft's plans to end support for Windows 10 in October 2025. However, recent data suggests that Windows 11 adoption is finally gaining momentum.

According to Steam's hardware survey for August, Windows 11 usage has reached 49 per cent, up from nearly 46 per cent in July. Conversely, Windows 10 usage has declined by approximately three per cent to 47 per cent, while macOS and Linux usage on Steam has remained relatively stable.

Windows 11 adoption has been increasing across the web over the past year. In July 2023, Windows 11 held a market share of around 23 per cent, which has now grown to nearly 32 per cent in August 2024, as reported by StatCounter.

Leaked data from October revealed that Windows 11 was in use on over 400 million devices, marking a slower adoption rate than Windows 10. It took Windows 10 just one year to reach 400 million active devices, whereas Windows 11 took two years to achieve the same milestone. This discrepancy is partly due to the stringent hardware requirements for Windows 11, which include a TPM security chip and CPUs released from 2018 onwards.
