Video game sales in U.S. up
37 percent increase in May
According to market researcher NPD sales of video game hardware and software in the U.S. were $1.12 billion in May, which is an increase of 37 percent from a year earlier. The best-selling game title for May was Take-Two Interactive’s “Grand Theft Auto 4," with sales of 4.2 million units. Sales of the GTA4 for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles were 1.31 million units in May.
Also during May Nintendo reported that it sold 675,000 Wii consoles, Sony reported that it sold 209,000 PlayStation 3 machines and Microsoft reported that it sold 187,000 Xbox 360 consoles.
While both Microsoft and Sony had indicated that sales of GTA 4 would likely translate into a surge of console sales, the sales of consoles did not follow that prediction. So far this year sales of video games have generated about $6.6 billion, with revenue expected to be between $21 billion and $23 billion in 2008.
