For those who came in late, CarPlay, lets the iPhone put a custom interface on a vehicle’s infotainment system. Jobs' Mob showed off CarPlay 2 in 2022.
The first vehicles using the system, initially called “iOS in the Car”, were supposed to arrive in 2024, but Apple has now scrubbed mentions of the 2024 date from the CarPlay page.
Apple insisted that CarPlay 2 has not been pulled, like so many of its products lately, but remains “in development”, where we guess it joins the ranks of notable software such as Duke Nukem 2.
A spokesApple said: “We continue to work closely with several automakers, enabling them to showcase their unique brand and visual design philosophies in the next generation of CarPlay. Each car brand will share more details as they near the announcements of their models that will support the next generation of CarPlay.”
Jobs’ Mob was proud to gain the support of luxury brands such as Aston Martin and Porsche for the next generation of CarPlay. According to Apple, car brands have committed to supporting the next generation of CarPlay, including Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Polestar, Porsche, Renault, and Volvo.
A recent leak revealed that CarPlay 2 will allow users to add widgets to the Home Screen, similar to those on iPhones and iPads.
If Apple can get the whole thing to work, CarPlay 2 will integrate with in-car sensors and native vehicle features such as air conditioning and FM radio, and the user interface will take over multiple screens in the car.
