He’s been harping on about this for a while now, saying that AI tools will become so powerful they can beat the most capable individuals in any domain. A cynic would say that is because he walked away from Generative AI in the early days and, despite trying to catch up with his own "right-wing" flavour, which has been particularly pants compared to rivals.

Last year, Musk claimed that a “full” AGI would be achieved by 2029. Musk has made a shedload of predictions that never even came close to happening. These include self-driving Teslas, landing a rocket on Mars, and building an affordable robot for the home, which are still on the to-do list.

Recent years have seen significant advancements in AI, with breakthroughs like video generation tools and more sophisticated chatbots pushing the technology's boundaries. Even Demis Hassabis, the co-founder of Google’s DeepMind, believes that AGI could be achieved by 2030, further highlighting the rapid pace of AI development.

But it’s not all smooth sailing. The pace of development has been slowed by a bottleneck in the supply of microchips, especially those made by Nvidia, which are essential for training and running AI models. Musk claims those constraints are easing, but new models are testing other data centre equipment and the electricity grid.

"Last year, it was chip-constrained—people could not get enough Nvidia chips. This year, it's transitioning to a voltage transformer supply. In a year or two, [the constraint is] just electricity supply," he said.
