Patent 20160041582 suggests that you have a "stack" of hardware components which is part of a modular computing device. It stacks together so that you only replace the bits you want to change.
Redmond helped showed off a similar concept at CES in 2014. This was gaming PC maker Razer’s concept for a modular PC called Project Christine. The system is still not available for consumers to buy. Acer has since introduced a modular PC called the Revo Build Mini PC for the low entry cost of $225.
A display is included in the hardware design. The stackable hardware connected to the display using a hinge which can contain a removable battery, a processor, a graphics card, memory, storage, speakers, and a wireless communication element.
The components can also have housings that are connected magnetically and are swappable.
“In this way, the computing device may be altered and changed readily by a user in an intuitive manner without requiring detailed knowledge of the hardware.” The Patent said.
Sadly the existence of a patent does not mean that Redmond is actually going to make any of this stuff. It does mean though that the idea is being considered.
