Although Apple pioneered ultrathin notebooks and practically wrote the book on tablets, CEO Tim Cook does not see hybrid tablets taking off. Speaking in a conference call, Cook said dismissed the concept, saying it would simply involve too many compromises.

"Anything can be forced to converge, but the problem is that products are about tradeoffs, and you begin to make tradeoffs to the point where what you have left doesn't please anyone," Cook said. "You can converge a toaster and a refrigerator, but those things are probably not going be pleasing to the user." [Is it just me, or is a hybrid toaster fridge the wave of the future? Ed]

It is a good point. Ultrabooks are pretty light and thin, but at 13 or 11.6 inches, they are still too bulky to be converted into tablets. Conversely, 10-inch tablets lack screen real estate to replace ultrabooks.

Cook also doesn’t believe it would be a good idea to add touch functionality to Macs, as it simply wouldn’t make sense due to ergonomic considerations.
