Toshiba rolls out three Excite tablets
Not that exciting really
What is the biggest practical size for a tablet? Toshiba designers reckon it is 13 inches, as the company has rolled out the world’s biggest tablet to date.
Powered by a Tegra 3 processor, the Excite 13 features a 1600x900 13-inch panel, full sized SD card slot, micro USB and HDMI, 1GB of memory and up to 64GB of storage. It also features quad-SRS speakers, so it should be the perfect choice for video. Prices start at $649 for the 32GB version, but frankly we can’t see the concept taking off. This is not a convertible tablet and it’s questionable how apps designed for much smaller screens, both in terms of resolution and physical size, will perform on this 13-inch behemoth.
Not to worry, Toshiba is happy to sell you 10-inch and 7.7-inch Excites as well. Both are powered by Tegra 3 chips and they seem like a pretty good choice, albeit they could do with lower price tags.
The 7.7-incher features an AMOLED screen, but there is no word on the resolution. Samsung’s 7.7-inch tablets feature a resolution of 1280x800 and there’s a good chance Toshiba went for similar panels as well. Prices start at €499 for the 16GB version, which is hardly what we would call cheap.
The 10-inch version is more down to earth. It will set you back $449 for the entry-level 16GB version and Toshiba markets it as a good all-rounder. It features a 1280x800 screen.
The prices might sound a bit steep, but there is a good reason for this. Toshiba spared no expense with the Excite series and all three models features aluminium shells, Gorilla Glass, stereo speakers, 5 and 2 megapixel cameras. Coupled with ICS on board, Excite tablets appear to have the premium look and feel fitting of high-end gear, but we are really not sure about the pricing.
