Since Ion 2 is a GPU that will talk to Intel's Pinetrail platform, you can imagine that this chip is more graphics GPU than a chipset. Intel's Pineview CPU has nortbridge capability and therefore Nvidia's Ion 2 won't deal with memory, CPU clock and other nortbridge responsibilities.
The main
task of Ion 2 or next generation Ion how Nvidia calls it will be to take care
of the graphics part. Since next generation Ion should have 40 shaders, it
should be more than twice as fast as the original Ion.
We also
heard that there won’t be more than one variant. Ion will be a single chip with
the same clocks and specification, at least at the introduction time, and later
Nvidia might change its mind and launch an even faster version of the chip.
Nvidia
expects much faster gaming and that Cuda applications will also run faster. This
is what Ion 2 will be all about, but once again, it’s not chipset it’s a GPU
with a fancy attractive Ion name on top of it.
