Sony has done an Apple and launched an 11.1-inch Atom-based netbook priced at $1299.

The amazingly thin VAIO X weighs just 700g, and at 13mm it's thinner than some mobile phones. This was accomplished by using some kinky stuff to make the chassis, mainly carbon fiber and some aluminum alloys.

Of course, you can't expect it to sport a powerful CPU in such a compact chassis, but nonetheless the 2GHz Atom Z550 is rather disappointing. It packs 2GB of memory and an SSD up to 128GB. Sony promises up to 14 hours of battery life, which is rather impressive.

The price tag is also impressive, and honestly, we just don't see many takers, in spite of the ultra thin form factor.

It will be available in black and pimp gold versions.
