Sony to push extended warranties
Not letting retailers rake in all the cash
Sony will be making a move to make sure that no money is left on the table by cashing in on the very lucrative extended warranty space for both its PlayStation3 and PlayStation Portable. Currently, only SCEA (Sony Computer Entertainment America) is going to be offering this in the U.S. If successful, however, it is very likely that the program will be expanded to other areas as well.
The move is an attempt by Sony to cash in on all of the third party extended warranties that are being sold at the retail level. Extended warranties are a money maker and Sony wants to get at least a slice of this pie. What is interesting, however, about the Sony extended warranty coverage is that unlike many other extended warranties, the Sony offers additional accidental damage coverage, as well. This means that if you crack or break the screen on your PSP, for example, you are covered if you purchase this extra coverage. Often times, many retail extended warranties offering do not cover any type of accidental damage.
The Sony plan extends the one-year included warranty on the PlayStation 3 to two years for $49.99, or three years for $59.99. The PSP extended warranty must be purchased within the first 30 days of owning the system. The one-year extended warranty is $29.99 and the two-year extended warranty is $39.99. If you want the accidental damage coverage it is an additional $39.99.
The warranty is a ship back style warranty repair. Shipping both ways is included in the cost of the extended warranty. Sony claims that customers are interested in this coverage due in part to the longer life cycle of the current consoles and the high cost of repair.
